Greater Lafayette Commerce Offers Health Matters Health Insurance Program
In May 2010, Greater Lafayette Commerce announced a new membership benefit—health insurance coverage at a 5-percent discount, available to local small businesses who are or become members of Greater Lafayette Commerce and who have between two and 50 employees.
Coverage is offered through Health Matters, a partnership between Greater Lafayette Commerce and Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana Inc.
Since last May, a number of businesses have taken advantage of this plan and reaped the benefits, says Membership Program Manager Resa Hodnett. “The companies who are participating are saving an average of $5,900 a year,” she says. “That’s a tangible benefit. Every company with between 2 and 50 employees should at least get a quote.”
One who did—and who then signed on for the managed care health insurance plan—is Smith Office Supply.
“We got a quote for the 5-percent Health Matters program last year when we were looking at renewal quotes,” says Brad Harper, Smith Office general manager. “The savings through the Greater Lafayette Commerce membership discount was significantly lower than the other quotes we saw. The annual savings is tremendous, and it is more than double what we invest in our annual membership with Greater Lafayette Commerce.”
Physicians Health Plan is a physician-governed company founded in 1983. Based in Indiana, it is a not-for-profit managed care organization. While Greater Lafayette Commerce is not offering the coverage or insurance, membership in Greater Lafayette Commerce gives small businesses access to the 5-percent discount.
